FTA would like to share with you some of the best foundations for dry skin. These foundations are generally suitable for girls and women with dry, cracked and flaky skin that seems to appear any time of the day in all seasons. Well, unfortunately, I’m one of those women and it actually bothers me especially when traveling to different countries my skin tends to get even drier due to its constant change of weather. Though I don’t always wear foundation there are times that I just have to wear some just to even out my skin imperfection.
In this article, my contributors and I at FTA will be sharing our favorite best foundation for dry skin and of course, these are definitely suitable for any types of sensitive skin that would instantly make you look flawless. These foundations also maintain hydration to your skin due to its powerful ingredients and thus prevents dryness and irritation. Most importantly, some of these foundations contain some of the highest and recommended SPF levels of up 25, which certainly will protect you from the sun while sightseeing, touring, traveling and walking around the city. Not only these foundations are perfect for daytime wear but as well as for night time wear, special events (parties, weddings, and celebrations).
Best Foundation For Dry Skin
1. Bare Minerals BareSkin Pure Serum Foundation
The BareSkin Mineral Pure Serum Foundation is my favourite as it’s suitable for my dry skin due to its hydrating formula. Not only it hydrates your skin but it also provides seamless adjustable coverage making it exceptionally purify and even out those imperfections. In addition to this, it brightens your skin into more youthful appearance. Prior to applying this you must apply some moisturizer and primer to your skin and shake the bottle thoroughly in order to get a good mixture of ingredients. Then squeze 2-3 drops onto the brush and start buffing up and spreading the foundation throughout your face using a brush. You can continue adding more foundation as you desire.
What I love about this foundation is that it keeps me hydrated but it does not caked or make my face too oily. I’ve used this 6 times just recently on my 3rd trip to Europe in July 2014. It was summer then and this foundation seemed to stay on and last for at least 6-7 hours. I didn’t really have to touch up for more coverage and didn’t have to apply my powder set. The only time I ever had to apply and touch up was towards the end (6-7 hours) later. Therefore, this foundation is definiltely suitable for summer and hot weather. Even better as it’s my go to foundation for winter and cold climate as my skin is a lot drier and once applying this foundation it makes me feel a lot better. Keeps my skin moist and hydrated whenever I use this foundation.
2. NARS Sheer Glow Foundation
The NARS foundation is quite popular among women due to its glowing, satin-finish with sheer and buildable coverage allowing it to get rid of visible skin discoloration. This foundation is also popular among women with dry skin due to its benefits such as complexion brightening formula, a consisting formula that hydrates for softer and smother skin, even more luminous after one application and that also improves skin brightness, radiance and texture.
This is also one of my go to foundations because of my dry skin. I love the fact that I could still use my face moisturizing cream prior to applying this foundation. Because the Nars foundation does not completely hydrate your skin, which is one of the things I noticed about this type of foundation. I also love the fact that it’s medium to full coverage but I rarely apply lots of layers because I don’t really need full coverage unless if I wanted to get that full heavy look.
However, there are some cons to this foundation just like any other beauty products. The NARS can appear too cakey especially when you start to apply more layers. Some people also complained that if you apply lots of NARS foundation it can become too noticeable especially around where your facial hair is. It also emphasize any skin blemishes or skin imperfections especially if you haven’t been exfoliating your skin in a long time. It has happened to me because I don’t always exfoliate my skin and once I applied I immediately noticed my white heads and skin blemishes. So, if you want to achieve that super smooth skin after applying this foundation I highly suggest you exfoliate your skin first and then apply your moisturizing cream before applying the NARS foundation. The NARS foundation also may not be suitable for your skin in winter time as it’s not as super hydrating.
My skin tone is between medium to olive brown so I usually use the benares and macao colours as it blends into my skin easily and smoothly, which obviously leaves my skin flawless and more radiant.
3. Revlon ColorStay Makeup with SoftFlex, Normal/Dry Skin, 370 Toast
The Revlon ColorStay foundation is suitable for those women with normal to dry skin. It has a medium to full coverage but unless the more layer you apply on it might give you a thicker coverage throughout your face. The foundation can last up to 24 hours and will definitely make your face feel comfortable and look matte and flawless. It’s a long wearing coverage, which means it certainly won’t rub off, fade or even cake. It has its ingredients that is tailored for normal to dry skin with oil-free and moisture balance formula are especially being formulated. In addition to these ingredients, it consist patented softflex, which provides lightweight comfort that you won’t even feel like you are wearing any makeup on.
This definitely goes well smoothly even applying after moisturizing cream and primer. It’s easily blendable by allowing you to spread evenly throughout your face using a foundation brush. It’s also blendable with the rest of your make up. You can easily cover red patches, blemishes, black circles or any skin imperfections. However, there are some cons to this foundation. It does not fully cover any redness or pimple but it makes it just lighter than your skin. Also, it appears that this is not the perfect foundation for summer time especially if you tend to get oily in the summer months. And the last thing is, there is no pump in the bottle, which makes it quite messy when you tip it over your hand.
4. Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Foundation
The Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Foundation has a mousse texture suitable for mature, dry and sensitive skin. You can easily apply it evenly on your face using your fingers and you certainly don’t need to apply several layers for a full coverage. The coverage appears from medium to full leaving your skin with a radiant and smooth finish and it doesn’t really make my dry skin worse. However it does make my skin slightly flake with some dry patches if I don’t apply my moisturizing cream prior to Laura Mercier foundation. I highly suggest you apply or even mix this foundation with some moisturizing cream with the right consistency and thus preventing your skin from flaking off.
This is a lightweight and hydrating foundation as it consist of a multipeptide complex that infused with Dermaxyl. It also contains an advanced optical diffusers, which prevents the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles especially for mature or older skin. This is certainly suitable for normal to dry skin as mentioned above you still need some moisturizing cream prior to application.
5. L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Make up
This type of L’Oreal Paris foundation is lightweight, luminous and easily buildable coverage, which can last up to 8 hours without reapplying any foundation or powder on. It consists of 40% pure water, which helps all day hydration for those with very dry skin. It also contains antioxidants and vitamins C & E to enhance clarity and skin tone. It’s also formulated with liquid light technology to allow instant luminous and radiant glow to your skin. Additionally, it also has SPF 20, which helps reduce the risk of skin cancer, premature ageing skin and also helps prevent sunburn while out in the sun. This is definitely a perfect foundation to use while traveling, touring and sightseeing in the summer time especially in a hot country where the sun is known to be quite harsh to the skin.
I’ve used this foundation during summer in New Zealand and Australia, as the sun in these countries are quite harsh leaving my skin to easily get sun burnt. The sun in these countries are also predominantly known for high risk of skin cancer and ageing skin. Therefore it’s important to apply a foundation that contains SPF 20. Also, if you are traveling to Europe in the summer time, do yourself a favour to wear this L’Oreal foundation, as the sun during summer in Europe is also quite hot, which can easily leave you with sun burnt skin but it’s not as harsh as compared to other countries.
Please note, before applying this foundation on make sure that you shake it thoroughly and then apply it evenly onto your face using fingertips or your favourite foundation brush. You need to blend it outward until desired coverage level is achieved. If you plan to be going out in the sun make sure you apply 15 minutes prior to sun exposure for effective protection.
6. MAC Mineralize Foundation SPF 15
The MAC Mineralize Foundation SPF 15 my favourite foundation of all time. I’ve been using MAC since 2004 and it always makes my face look so flawless and not cakey. It provides medium to full coverage depending on the amount of layers you apply on your face. It provides lightweight and smooth finish. Most important of all, it also provides a hydrating sensation throughout the day. It’s not oily but it’s highly hydrating to any skin type (especially from normal to dry skin).
This MAC foundation contains SPF 15 with rich and luxurious cream solid and liquid mineral infusion. This delivers extreme hydration to the skin and also provides protection from the sun. This is definitely one of the best foundation for dry and sensitive skin due to its cream and mineral infusion formula that highly provides long lasting hydration to your skin. Additionally, it also provides high comfort wear and long lasting wear even in the heat and summer time.
The only thing I’m not 100% satisfied is the sponge, as toward the end of the product it creates a buildup of MAC foundation. You need to clean and wash your sponge thoroughly when you start to notice the amount of MAC on the sponge. However, sometimes I still find that the foundation is still quite thick on the sponge. It will require multiple wash.
7. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup SPF 20
I have been suffering from super dry and sensitive skin all my life especially in the winter time. Fortunately, I managed to try out the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Foundation Makeup SPF20 in tan to medium and natural tan shades. The foundation provides super natural and healthy skin, which seemingly leaves natural coverage throughout your face. And in addition it contains SPF 20 together with visibly improve skin luminosity, tone and texture. Another perfect foundation to protect from damaging your skin from the sun.
It contains flawless coverage, lightweight, silky formula, exclusive amount of antioxidnants and SPF 20 to allow and maintain that fresh, youthful and healthy looking skin. These formulae also provide extreme skin hydration once applied and therefore this is more recommended for dry skin. It will definitely maintain, rehydrate and moisturize your skin throughout the day without having to worry about cracks, dry patches or flakiness that might settle in your skin any time of the day.
This foundation makeup is also good for a natural dewy look (if you prefer this type of look). However, the consistency can be quite runny and the texture feels like a lotion. You might find that it’s easer to apply this foundation by using your fingers or with a different brush as it doesn’t blend evenly to some normal makeup brushes.
As for application, my only favourite way or probably even the best way to apply it is with a beauty blender or with a real technique blending sponge and a stippling foundation brush as all of which do provide a much nicer flawless and smooth finish.
Overall, the Neutrogena foundation provides such a fantastic coverage that even acne, pimple and blimishes can be covered and it has also more of a dewe finish. All of which is definitely suitable for people with dry and sensitive skin. Additionally, it gives you super flawless finish and even last throughout the day without having to touch up with your powder and it definitely does not wear off.
8. Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus Foundation SPF 15
The Clinique Repairwear Foundation contains SPF 15, which is another good foundation for day time and in the summer as it provides provides protection from the sun. It’s also designed to give your skin the moisture, which instantly helps clear out and smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, thus preventing the amount of settled lines. In addition to this it has a powerful repairwear laser focus serum in order to enhance the look, smoothness and softness of your skin. This foundation is definitely perfect for dry and mature skin as it’s also hydrating and maintains long lasting moisture that we always need throughout the day.

This is also tailored for those people who don’t want to get dolled up but just to simply even out their skin complexion just with perfect coverage. It’s also designed and tailored for those who are always in a rush due to their busy lifestyle, as the foundation stick is so much easier to apply without having to worry about using any brushes but your fingertips.
This foundation is quite creamy and hydrating to the skin and therefore it’s suitable for those with dry and sensitive skin like me. It provides a great medium to heavy coverage depending on the amount of layer you need to cover up. It also last a whole day without any retouch required. And this foundation stick will also last you at least a couple of months thus allowing you to save some money from buying more makeup. However, it is a little bit pricey but you are really paying for the quality of this product, as it’s effective with perfect coverage, not too heavy but light on the skin and will also give you glowing, hydrating and radiant skin throughout the day.
11. Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Ultimate Radiance Makeup SPF 15

This foundation will also give you the right mix of color, which will definitely blend with your complexion and a long lasting formula. It also includes a golden applicator spoon and a luxe sponge application for easy and smooth application.
The only disadvantage of this foundation is the price, which I think you are really paying for the quality.
12. Tom Ford Traceless Perfecting Foundation SPF 15 Buff
I have been using this foundation, as it’s one of the best foundation for dry skin lately and quite love it despite the price. My skin type is very dry and prone to breakout due to its sensitivity. Fortunately, the Tom Form Traceless Perfecting foundation provides extreme hydration and super lasting wear. The coverage is medium at most and if added more layers to your skin it can cause cakeyness and thickness, which is not a pleasant look.
The good thing about this product is that it has a hidden pump, which enables you to easily pump out the required amount of foundation for your skin. Tom Ford foundation also offers variety of shades for all skin tones.
Overall, it’s not a bad foundation but it’s just a bit too pricey and it’s not suitable for those who can’t afford. The texture is average it’s medium thick but once applied it feels a bit runny and thus requires evening it out properly. But this is highly recommended for dry skin and you’ll also appreciate the long-wearing option and that it does not dry out your skin and also doesn’t emphasize any flakes.
13. Clarins HydraQuench Tinted Moisturizer SPF 6
This tinted moisturizer foundation contains SPF 6 that combines skin soothing and light diffusing pigments effect in a natural looking luminosity. The Clarins tinted foundation is also designed to reduce the visibility of lines, wrinkles and imperfections. It also has a perfect based to enhance youthful looking face. Hence, no doubt this will be the perfect foundation for mature or older skin, as it will certainly make you look younger. It also contains pure titanium dioxide sunscreen.
Some of the best things about this foundation are: it can easily be blended and allow to set radiantly. It’s smooth and creamy texture is ideal for normal to dry skin preventing you from having dry, flakey and patchy skin. And the foundation also sets to a radiant satin finish with sheer coverage in your skin making you look glowy throughout the day.
However, there are some cons about this product. Some of which are the formula is highly fragrant that contains several fragrance ingredients that can severely cause irritation to most people (inluding myself). I usually don’t like or prefer wearing grant foundation due to the sensitivity of my skin and sense of smell. In terms of hydration, this may not be the perfect hydrating foundation for dry skin due to the amount of fragrant ingredients that can easily cause problems and irritation for all skin types. Nevertheless, there’s no harm in trying in trying this foundation as some people reported that it’s not that bad.
Another disadvantage to this foundation is the very low amount or insufficient of SPF, which is definitely considered below the minimum SPF 15 that’s recommendation from Medical Boards Worldwide for adequate daytime sun protection. Also, the shades are known to set unnatural peachy tone, which is quite difficult to even it out and soften once applied to your skin, although the coverage is quite sheer.
14. Christian Dior Diorskin Forever Flawless Perfection Fusion Wear SPF 25
The Christian Dior Forever foundation is perfect for those people suffering from acne with dry patches as by applying this foundation moisturizes your face and it also has a natural to medium coverage. One of the good things about this foundation has one of the highest SPF 25, which will definitely protect you from the sun. It’s also a perfect foundation to wear while sightseeing and traveling out in the sun especially in the summer.
Upon application you’ll instantly notice that this foundation is very soft and it glides effortlessly across the face and allowing you to fully cover your face almost instantly. This also allows you to add more layers as needed without looking too cakey. One of the things I’ve noticed though is that it’s better to use your fingers at the start prior to using a blending sponge or a brush. This definitely will give you a flawless look without having the foundation drying up around the lines of your face.
However, there is some disdvantages to this foundation. While using a brush to spread the product across the face it sets very quickly and then it leaves an uneven coverage that’s why I suggest to use your fingers first. Also, this product can make your face look and feel oily for those people with oily skin. I can only suggest that this is more suitable for people with dry skin like myself.
Despite of this, this foundation can give you a matte, flawless yet very hydrated look to the skin. It doesn’t look too dried out on the skin either. I even used this a few times without using a primer and this foundation managed to stay on for a whole day while I was out in the sun.
In terms of the scent it has the kind of like a floral, soft and sweet scent, which is not too overpowering though I find that it’s quite noticeable. So, if you don’t like these kind of smell or if you are too sensitive to any kind of fragrances on foundations then you might not like this. I don’t particularly like any kind of smell on any foundations but this is an exception as I really like the formula and the finish look of this product.
Overall, it’s a fantastic foundation, perfect for those with dry skin and this lives up to its expectations. This is available in various shades to suit your skin tone.
15. Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme Foundation
This type of foundation is definitely ideal for dry skin due to its moisture supreme formula and texture. It gives you medium to full, buildable coverage, whilst at the same time making you look super healthy with a natural looking finish. The innovative ingredients that have been implemented are quite powerful as it helps to visibly soften your fine lines and wrinkles thus minimizes the visibility of ageing skin.
Some of the good things about this foundation is that it is 100% fragrance free and silicone free. It also offers various range of shades to suit your tone and skin type. However, the lack of SPF levels are not being formulated in this foundation, which means you might have to wear a sunscreen prior to application in order to protect you from the sun.
