Best Things To Do In Santorini Greece: Attractions Walking Tour

I was in Santorini, Greece in July 2014 and I still can’t get enough of this beautiful island.  Here are some of the best things to do in Santorini, Greece, some of which are by far my favourite places to indulge in.  Santorini is one of my favourite destinations in Europe.   I fell in love with Italy and France but after visiting Santorini, Greece, this beautiful island has become my go to holiday spot to indulge in the sunset, beaches, typical Greek architecture, beautiful marble stones, local Greek food and the beautiful views of the ocean, outdoor activities and everything else that Santorini has to offer.

Santorini definitely has a special place in my heart!  I heard many stories about Santorini prior to visiting the island but nothing could prepare me for the actual experience!  It is a very romantic and picturesque island.  The sunset, sunrise and the many characterised pastel buildings fascinated me.  I was amazed with its small blue, pink and yellow doors, white windows, low ceilings and caved houses that are heavily painted in white and pastel colours.  There’s no doubt that this unique architecture is a symbol of Greece.  If you plan to visit Santorini, you’ll get to experience a variety of luxurious and simple hotels situated on the cliff of the island where it overlooks the magnificent view of Fira and Oia.

Below are my favourite things to do and see in Santorini, which hopefully will guide you and give you some ideas before you venture on your holiday.  Please be warned though! Santorini requires a lot of walking to see and experience the villages.  I highly recommend you wear slip resistant shoes or sandals and that will also provide extra comfort and support throughout your holiday.

1. Oia

I would have to say that Oia is the place where you want to stay to find some time for yourself, to relax, enjoy the scenery of the ocean, volcano, beaches, restaurants, cafes and typical Greek houses.  The reason why this village is the best place to find relaxation is that it’s a lot quieter than Fira.  Though, Oia is one of the most picturesque villages in Santorini due to its abundance of colourful, white and pastel Greek architecture situated on the cliff.  If you look at the map of Santorini, Oia is located on the Northern part, which sits just on the corner, built on the border of Caldera.  This village is also well known for its beautiful sunset where people gather up on the corner of Oia.  In addition to this, you’ll also find lots of landmarks, museum, churches, historic sights and museums.

Santorini Travel Vlog (Video)

Here’s our travel vlog during our trip to Santorini in July 2014.  We did a lot of things in Fira, Oia and the beaches and also did a lot of sightseeing and walking tour on our own.  You don’t really need to hire a personal tour guide.

2. Fira

Fira comes second as it’s the perfect place to shop around, party, and enjoy lunch and dinner.  It’s also a lot livelier than Oia.  You’ll definitely get to to meet lots of tourists, locals and shop owners.  It’s full of affordable Restaurants, Cafes, Retail Shops (for those who love shopping women clothes, shoes, local souvenirs and many more), Ice Cream shops, Bars and Nightlife.  Fira is known as the capital city or village of Santorini.  There are plenty of things to do in this village.  The Cathedral of Saint John The Baptist is also situated at the top of Fira.  Fira is a blissful spot for a getaway.  Make sure to find the best hotel right in the centre of Fira to experience the scenery and views.  We managed to stay in Fira for 5 days and nothing can compare the experience we had.

Here’s some footage of Fira Santorini, Greece.  We managed to vlog around island, which was really enjoyable.  I hope you’ll enjoy this and will somehow inspire you to visit Santorini.

3. Eating

You really can’t miss out the typical Greek food in Santorini, Greece.  I actually find that Greece has the best Greek food to choose from.  Lots of flavour, restaurants and cafes to choose from.  Though I noticed that there aren’t that many different cuisines to choose from aside from Greek food.  You’ve got to try their typical Souvlaki, which is also my favourite.  We mainly ate around Fira.  And I remember our first meal was at Classico Restaurant, which overlooks the ocean, volcano and the cliff of Fira.

4. Beaches

Kamari and Perissa

If you are headed to Santorini in the summer (June-August) then going to the beach to sunbathe, relax or swim will be a perfect choice.  But please be warned that it can get crowded in the summer.  However if you are heading in the fall or spring then you should be able to find some umbrella seats to sit on and enjoy the view with your cocktail.  Kamari and Perissa are the perfect beaches to enjoy your cold drinks, relax and watch the ocean.  It really is relaxing though in summer time you’ll find that tourists are just everywhere trying to get the best spot.

Red Beach

The beautiful Red Beach is also famous among tourists and locals.  It’s very unique due to its rust coloured reef.  We went there just to see what it really looks like as we’ve heard people talking about it.  We didn’t see any umbrella seats so make sure that you carry a mat to lie on.  Upon arriving, I didn’t really like the area as I didn’t feel too safe.  The big rocks were too close to the shore and if anything were to happen in an instance of a landslide, it would’ve been too dangerous for everyone and even finding the safest spot to relax were.  I much prefer Kamari and Perissa beach.

5. Outdoor Activities

If you’re into outdoor activities, you’ll find lots of options to choose from while holidaying in Santorini.  One of which is the Santorini Sea Kayak Day Tours.  You’ll get to enjoy kayaking on the ocean while overlooking the beautiful view of the Caldera cliff, Fira and Oia’s typical Greek architecture.  You’ll also get to experience and enjoy swimming in a cave, snorkling and picnics by the beach.  But make sure that you wear sunscreen prior to your activities and also wear a hat as it gets really hot while in the middle of the ocean kayaking.

6.  Hiring a Quad Bike

This is totally optional though so much fun!  We hired a quad bike while we stayed in Santorini. We were there for 5 days and it was our only means of transportation to get around the island.  I highly recommend hiring a quad bike as it’s easy to get around, find a parking and you get to sunbathe at the same time while driving around Santorini.  However, this is only good for summer time.  Riding a quad bike when it’s fall, spring or winter it can get a bit too cold.  Santorini is quite windy so be prepared to carry a cardigan or light jacket to keep you warm regardless of the weather.  In the hilly areas it gets quite cold at night time even in the summer.

Hi Annie lee, thank you! You can’t miss Santorini and it’s such a beautiful island! I’ve just checked your website. I’m loving all your travel articles and photos 🙂

  1. I’d put Oia at the top of the list too if I did this post. 🙂
It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen – possibly because there’s no other place like it. What you see on any heavily photoshopped photos or postcards is exactly what you will see in Santorini itself. It’s like the whole place is photoshopped! :p

I agree with you! What you see in either matte or glossy postcards is exactly what you see Oia or Fira in real life and in fact it’s much better than photos. I’d love to one day buy a holiday house in Oia 🙂
